Mr. I'.. Butcher, of Bay View, Napier, has left for Portland Island, where he lias been appointed sole teacher of the school.

At the annual meeting yesterday afternoon of the Gisborne Citizens' Defence Committee eulogistic reference was made to the services rendered by the secretary. Mrs. Ada M. Beer, who had given valuable assistance towards the relief of unemployment in Poverty Bay. The efforts of Mrs. Beer in this direction were grcatlv appreciated, said the chairman. Mi. W. (.!•. Sherratt. • .Mr. .1. T. Harvey, the retiring man-aging-director of the Hawkc's Bay Motor Co., was met by n representative gathering of the company's employees in Napier on Saturday and presented with a handsome armchair as a marl; of the esteem and respect itt which lie is held by all and a memento of his many years of service in the company's interests, Tho gathering was representative of tho (50 .members of the company's staff in Wairoa, Gisborne, Tntipo and VYairakei and the presentation was made by Mr. T. Griftin, who, on behalf of his eolleagues. wished Mr. Harvey a mug life and prosperilv. Mr. R. Mitchell, of Wairoa, one' of the oldest drivers in the company's service, ah- spoke on behalf of the Wairoa st'.:f;'. Mr. Harvey, in reply, thanked the donors for their gift, which he would always treasure and referred to the excellent relations flint had existed between the staff and himself. Fie introduced the new manager. Mr. D. McArthur, of Wellington, to those present and expressed the hope that they would be as loyal to the new manager as thev had been to him in the past.—H.B.
