MAULED BY LIONESS
ATTENDANT CLIMBS INTO CAGE PRETORIA, Dec. 3. There was an exciting incident at the lions' cage of a travelling show on Pretoria Square, Pretoria, this morning, when Emil Smith, 8, was mauled bv a lioness. "it is believed that the child, who lived near the show, had been a constant visitor to the lions’ cage, and was this morning standing near the ha i s. The cage is about 12ft.j high, is roofless, and held two lionesses. What roused the anger of one of the animals is not known, but suddenly the attendant heard the' shrieks of a child. He saw that a lioness was clawing the. child on the arm and face. Unable to open the cage quickly enough, the attendant climbed the bars and jumped into the cage. The lioness then released the child and turned savagely on ’him. Coolly, he.grasped a plank, broke it over the lioness’ head, and punched the animal, and then climbed out again with a breeding linger. The child was taken to hospital in a serious condition. His face and left wrist were badly injured. The attendant was modest about the part he had played in rescuing the child. The animals have been removed into a caravan fitted with iron bars. While one lioness clawed the child the other merely watched.
