CHRISTCHURCH POSITION GOO MEN UNEMPLOYED (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, last night. As the outcome of a motion carried at a meeting of unemployed in Christchurch to-day. the .Mayor, the Rev. .). !\ Archer, has complied with a request that a conferen c he convened of representatives of the primary and secondary industries, merchants and retailers, Chamber of Commerce, Manufacturers’ Association, churches, Trades Hall, burgesses association, women’s organisations, and such other bodies as the Mayor may think tit. At the meeting of unemployed it was stated that 6CO men were work less in Christi.'hurch, that some children were starving, and tnnt the need for wor,; was desperate. It was urged that the Government he pressed to make an immediate start with work >n the South Island Main Trank Railway. A suggestion made by r 'r. Thacker was that the Government should subsidise payment for gorse emooing on the lands of Banks Peninsula. The lion. G. W. Forbes, Vcting-Vvime Minister, in reply to the telegram making this proposal, said he > ould ie fu r it to Cabinet, as there was no authority to spend public money for improving private land.
