FOR SALE AT AUCTION
THE GUELPH TREASURE VALUED AT £500,000 (Received Jan. 2, 11 a.m.) BERLIN, Jan. 1. The ex-Kaiser’s son-in-law, Duke Ernst of Brunswick, recently decided to sell to German art dealers Ills £500,000 famous collection of mediaeval works of ecclesiastical art known as the Guelph treasure. The news was received with indignant protests from the whole of tiie German press, which fears a resale to America, upon which the duke offered the treasure, as well as his palace near Hanover, with a park, to the people for £500,000. The offer is estimated to be worth £BOO,OOO. The Hanover Council, on which there aro a majority of Socialists and Communists, rejected the offer on the ground of economy. Therefore the collection will now be sold.
