An increase is- noted in the number of passengers carried by the municipal transport services on Boxing Day when compared with the same day last year. Yesterday the functions at the Childers road reserve helped to swell the numbers of low-priced fares>, but longer distance travel was comparatively neglected; for instance, whereas on Boxing Day last year 114 passengers were catered for on the Wainui run, only about 40 availed themselves of this service yesterday. The .whole bus service yesterday 'carried about 300 more passengers, with iv slight increase in the total fares, than did tho buses and trams on Boxing Day last year. The parcels and letter mails during itho Christmas period wero the heaviest over experienced in Gas-borne, according to reports from the Post Office. The posting of Christmas matter commenced later this year than is usually the case, for the improved services allow later posting to be availed of by the public. Under these circumstances, the Post Office staff here found the inward rush upon it before it had time to free itself from tho outward Christinas mails, a position which did not anise a few years ago. As is usual, many of the inward parcels were late in arriving, and the heaviest consignment brought by the new overland parcels sea-vice was a batch of 56 hampers which arrived on Tuesday afternoon, too late for delivery, but a 'number of people collected their parcels during the evening. Another large consignment of parcels arrived this morning, when the Margaret W brought 53 hampers of parcels and bags of papers, some, of the parcels having been intended for Christmas.

A delightful restive spirit pervaded Cook Hospital on Christmas Day, and the nursing staff and many generous Gisborno people did much to lighten the suffering and bring happiness to those who were unfortunate' enough to spend tho festive season in hospital—-indeed, so much was done for their comfort that it might even bo said that some at least wero fortunate to spend Christmas in tho institution. Canon .If. Packo, in, the guise of Santa Claus, gave much happiness in the children's ward 'during the afternoon, where ho presided over an attractive Christmas tree, well-laden with an excellent assortment of gifts for tho children. A competitive spirit was introduced wil,h excellent results into the decoration of the other wards, and visitoifljfo the hospital decided by popular vote which made the most attractive and spectacular display, first place being awarded to one deiorateil in Maori style. Another ward, charmingly arranged in Japanese fashion, well-deserved second place in order of merit, and a third, daintily arranged as a flower garden was greatly admired, as were also tho other wards hi the hospital. Altogether a thoroughly delightful day was spent, and tho patients were warmly appreciative of the kindness and generosity of tho medical superintendent, the matron and nursing staff, and the-visitors.
