MYSTERIOUS S.O.S.

STATEMENT BY OWNERS AN EXTRAORDINARY MISTAKE LONDON, Nov. 22. The owners of the steamer Baron Elcho say that they are convinced that there is an evtraordinary mistake somewhere. When the ship left Port Said on Wednesday for Home with a cargo of sugar from Java, she sent a message, “Ail well.” The officers and engineroom men are nearly all* Clydesiders. The wireless operator is a Londoner who was provided by the Marconi company, and the crew are Lascars. RUMORS UNFOUNDED _____ / WIRELESS OPERATOR ILL (Received Nov. 23, noon) LONDON, Nov. 22. The owners have received a wireless message from Port Said stating that there is no ground for the Baron Elcho rumors. 'Captain MacDonald was not aware that the destroyers were searching for the ship. The wireless operator was seriously ill.

A cable message yesterday stated: The British Commander-in-Chief in the Mediterranean reports by wireless that signals were received from the British steamer Baron Elcho from Tjilatjap requesting immediate assistance as an attack had been made to drug or murder the wireless operator. The signals are believed to bo a hoax, but four destroyers have been sent to search for the steamer.
