N.Z. TAXPAYERS

FEDERATION SECRETARY SHORT VISIT TO GISBORNE A brief visit was paid to Gisborne by Colonel G. T. Ilall, secretary, of the New Zealand Taxpayers’ Federation, an important organisation with headquarters in Wellington, which has been very successful in obtaining reductions in taxation and in impressing ori the Government its views in regard to State trading and in regard to economy in expenditure. Colonel Hall had intended to spend a little time in Gisborne in the hope of enlisting support here among the business people for the objects oi the federation, but pressure of business elsewhere lias prevented his fulfilling this intention. He proposes at a later period to take steps to arrange for an address here on behalf of the federation, and possibly the formation of a subbranch of the New Zealand organisation. The objects of the federation should appeal to business men of Gisborne, especially in view of their reference to relations between State and private trading. They are: (1) To impress upon the Government the necessity for strict economy in administrative expenditure, to indicate where and how such economy could be effected without impairing the efficiency of the various public services, and to urge the extension and completion of the departmental accounting system; (2) to create and maintain a- spirit of greater’ national efficiency; (3) to impress upon the Government the need for a substantial reduction in the volume of taxation and for an equitable readjustment of its incidence; (4) to use every means to bring into close co-opera-tion producing, business and shipping interests for their own protection and for the promotion of the public welfare; (5) to use the utmost pressure to make State and municipal trading concerns subject to the same conditions, taxation and charges as are imposed upon private trading concerns of the same character; (6) .to protect business, producing and manufacturing interests from misrepresentation; (7) to co-ordinate existing organisations of the same description for combined action wherever desirable.
