EDUCATION INQUIRY

PROGRAMME ARRANGED NEW ZEALAND TOUR (Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. 'Flie Select Committee of the House of Representatives! which is to deal with the education questions, will commence its general investigation of the education system next Monday in Auckland. It comprises the Minister of Education, the lion. 11. Atmore, Mr. \\. A. Bodkin, Central Otago, chairman, Mr. G. C. Black, Motueka, the Rev. C. Carr, Timaru, Mr. P. Fraser, Wellington Central, Mr. H. Holland, Christchurch North, Colonel T. W. McDonald, Wairarapa, Mr. J. A. Murdoch, Marsden, Mr. G. R. Sykes, Masterton, and the Hon. J. A. Young, Hamilton.

The Minister has consulted the committee regarding arrangements, and a general plan has ’been completed for a tour of the Dominion which will give opportunities to inspect every variety of educational activity. When the Auckland business is concluded during the coming week, it is intended to proceed to Rotorua, Matamata, Hamilton, Te Kuiti, Piopio, New Plymouth, Feilding, and Palmerston North m the order named, though it will be impossible to announce the dates until the committee has commenced to take evidence and ascertains how much time is required in each centre.

A South Island tour will follow, the investigation including Lincoln Agricultural' College, Sumner school for deaf, Otekaike institution for .backward children, and Otago medical and dental schools. Finally, an inspection will be made of the Cawthron Institute, Nelson.

This investigation is a new development in Parliamentary methods, which is being somewhat extensively adopted by the Government, as there is another committee of Parliamentarians deputed to look into matters connected with several secondary industries. The procedure will bo welcomed! b v members of the House, as it enables representatives of all parties to secure first-hand knowledge on important questions, instead of being obliged to rely on official reports or printed evidence.
