RAISING OF GOATS
NEW INDUSTRY SUGGESTED (Special to the Herald.) ♦ AUCKLAND, this day. “Goat raising appears to have possibilities if conducted on proper lines,” said Mr. A. L. Nugent, giving evidence before the Returned Soldiers' Rehabilitation Commission. Excellent cheese made from goats’ milk was being imported into New and finning a market. He said it was safe to say that the milk of goats would be generally prescribed by doctors in preference to cows’ milk for rearing infants if reliable supplies were available. This suggested- the possibility of the establishment of goat farms in close proximity tto large centres. Surplus supplies of milk could ba turned into cheese in a small factory. The milk might possibly be condensed and tinned for sale to chocolate manufacturers. The use of goats’ flesh for food for local consumption or export was advocated. “Tho idea should be thoroughly examined, and if possibilities prove to be existent the industry should be reserved as far as possible for disabled men,” Mr. Nugent concluded. Mr. .T. S. Barton, S.M., chairman of tho commission, considered the suggestion was worthy of investigation.
