GISBORNE POST OFFICE

RETURNS OF REVENUE INCREASE IN TELEGRAPH FEES A substantial increase is shown in the telegraph returns of the revenue collected at the Gisborne Post Office for the quarter ending September 30, 1929, when compared with tho corresponding periods in 1928 and 1927. The total postal and telegraph revenue for the three months is £27,139 15s 3d, an increase of £259 12s 10i,d on the amount for the quarter ending September 30, 1928. Increases consisted of £227 moi ; e ft>r telegrams, £463 more for the telephone exchange, and £274 more for toll calls, while decreases were shown in the postage and private box rent returns of £B2l and £5 respectively. The statement shows that 4991 money orders wore issued as against 4862 and 4640 for the corresponding quarters in 1928 and 1927 respectively, the amounts being £31,995 17s sd, £30,909 10s 7d, and £29,954 9s 9d respectively. For the quarter, £153,691 3s 9d was deposited in the Savings Bank, last year’s being , £145,839 14s, and the previous year’s £133j358 8s 9d. The withdrawals

for the quarter totalled £156,576 IBs lid, compared with £159,125 13s 5d and £173,983 8s 5d for the corresponding periods last year and the previous year respectively. The excess of withdrawals over deposits amounted to £2885 15s 2d for the quarter ending September 30, 1929, while last year there was ' ( an excess of withdrawals over deposits to the* extent of £13,285 19s sd, and in .1927 the amount totalled £40,624 19s Bd.
