TO PREVENT SUFFERING

SETTLER WILL KILL SHEEP ALBUttY (N.S.W.), Oct. 19. Mr. W. L. Vines, who settled at Walpeup, near Ouyen, 33 years ago, and is consequently one of tho pioneers of the Mallee, is on a visit to- relatives at Albury. Mr. Vines tells a grim story of the' tribulations of the Malice people, who, after experiencing two very bad seasons, are now faced with a third, which is a complete failure. The. rainfall for the year in the Mallee so far amounts to oniy 3|in., said Mr. Vines, and what little rain has fallen came at the wrong period of the year. There had been practically, no spring rains, and the crops had withered beyond ail hope of recovery.

Mr. Vines said that when he returned to his farm he intended to shoot his horses and cut the throats of his sheep', which were in the last stages of emaciation. There was not ah atom of fodder for them, and it was impossible to procure any. It would be merciful to put an end to their sufferings, he said.
