Geintiteil said no slight was intended. —The report of I he engineer was referred to the lighting committee. Woods, of Wellington, was authorised to number the houses in the borough. It was not a fair wage.—C r. ■Gemmell: The man said he could make a do of it, as he had a way of supplementing his salary. —The opposition to the appointment then dropped, and the action of the committee was con-firmed.—-Or, Wilson complained that some of the men did not start at 7.30 a.m. as they were supposed to do.— The overseer was instructed to see thai the proper hours were kept. The finance committee's report was then adopted. The works committee's report was read and thereon Cr. Ross moved to dispense with the services of an employee (already reduced;. —The Mayor ruled that Or. Boss must give notice of motion for next meeting, which he did. The matter of a stock-holding paddock ,'tt the western end of the borough is to be looked into, the Mayor and Crs. Gemmell and Ross to be a subcommittee for the purpose. —The formal resolution appointing Mr. McLeod health inspector and inspector of sanitary works and plumbing was passed. —Mr. W. McCurdy said the users might pay enough to cover the cost of a loan. Cr. Brady suggested putting in a lin. pipe, hut tiie Mayor said this would he of no value. Or. Wilson thought, that if the cattle owners clubbed together to put down £lO each it, might be done. The council decided to inform the petitioners that there was a resolution on the books permitting persons to lay pipes to suit their wants. —it was decided, on the motion of Cr. Wilson, to plant the steepest part of the cemetery reserve with gum trees, 2000 to be'ordered.—The lighting committee is. to report on the cost, of putting a light at the hospital turn-off. —Cr. Gem uiell asked for a return of all moneys spent in maintenance in Marine Parade and Carroll street to the dairy factory for the last two years to find out howfar such expense would go to tar-seal the road. The clerk said he could not give the figures (except as regards the water cost) for no separate costs had been kept.
