COUNCIL'S MONTHLY MEETING (Herald Correspondent.) Those present at the Inst' meeting of the Matakaoa County Council were CVs. A. 1.5. Kemp (chairman), C. Williamson, K. (i. Saxbv, C. W. Cowan, G. L. Fraser, (!. T. Kohcre, G. W. Staintou, and (}. if. Maddox .Messrs. Grant and Cooke, as engineers to the council, reported upon the existing surveyed read line to .Matakaoa station, and recommended the taking of a more practicable route via the wharf road.—Received. Messrs. Rees, Blight and Wauchop wrote covering copies ot. notice of intention to take land t'oV a road through Wharekahika 18 C and ]>, and Matakaoa blocks for execution.—Received. Messrs. Grant and Cooke forwarded particulars of the proposed Taurangukaatuku bridge for approval, and ad vised that steps were, being taken to obtain the District Engineer's approval to the scheme. -.Messrs. Grant . and Cooke's proposals were approved and they were instructed to request the District Engineer to further same as ex peditiously as possible. The district) telegraph engineer requested payment of £7> 18s as half the cost of shifting four telegraph poles con sequent on the reconstruction of the Letter Hex Hill section of the main highway.—'Hie council could not see its way clear to accept any liability of shifting leelgrapb poles from road lines, unless it had some say in the original placing of the poles. Mr. T. W- Hammond's offer to lease the Hicks Bay Hill paddock was de elined. The chief surveyor forwarded approved plans and schedules of land to he taken for road and harbor purposes at Hicks Bay.j—Received. Mr. J. N. Barbara's application foi the transfer of his billiard saloon license to Mr. .Nicholas Barbara was granted. five tenders were received for the demolition of the Hicks Bay Hill roadman's cottage, and its re-erection near the junction of the Kopuapounamu and Kokomoko roads. Mr. H. Nelson's tender of £4O was accepted. It was decided to purchase a tractor with a. grader and scarifier at a price of £727 10s, f.o.h* Auckland, and that application he made to the Main Highways Board for the supply of the plant on terms of payment of the purchase money by three" equal instalments extending over three years. Cr. Maddox drew attention '■) the uselessness of the bridge by Mr. Mogan Williams' gate on the Hicks ! ay potaka road, and suggested that it be placed across the creek running over the road at Mr. Matiu te Hina's.— The over seer is to investigate. An apology is to be forwarded to Mr. Biwai Kangihuna for the action of the council's employees in taking his trees without permission, such action hemp due to a misunderstanding.—Mr._ Ttangi huna is to he paid £2 compensation. Vv. Stainton advised of" a building having been erected without a permit. rind the. clerk was instructed to notify tbe offender of the council's requirements. The overseer advised of his intention to regrade the Hukarere road in the early future. —CV. Kohere advised of the need of minor repairs to the track part of the East Cape road and was authorised to put a man on the work for a day or so.—The engineer was instructed to plant willow cuttings at the Awatere River crossing of the main roadCr. Williamson's action in authorising Mr. Gardiner to lay off and submit, a scheme to the Public Works Department for the Kopuapounamu road approach to the, Avvatere bridge was confirmed. Cr. Williamson reported having, with the agi'eonhleness of (Vs. Cowan ano Eraser, authorised Messrs. Grant and Cooke to survey an accessway from the .Kopuapounemu road to Mr. Hughes' I boundary. Mr. Fairlie, who occupied the property which the line passed through, was desirous o! the council fencing one side of the lino as sqou. as possible, and was prepared to supply gratis the required strainers and battens.—Cr. Williamson's action was confirmed, and the council decided to proceed with the fencing. Thoi rosolutioni prohibiting the 'setting up of committees for dealing with tenders was rescinded- . , The clerk was instructed to invite tenders for the construction of the Tauhangakautuku bridge as soon as the proposals come to hand, and Crs. Williamson, Eraser, and Cowan were appointed to deal with them. Tho council's regrets are to be conveyed to Mr. Watene Waititi at the action in taking, without permission, trees from his bush for the Maraehara stream protection work. The council donated £25 towards the earthquake relief fund. 'The request of Mr. Hovell regarding the abandoned road line fronting the hospital grounds is to be submitted to the Hospital Board and any arrangement arrived at is to be approved by the council. . .
Mr. Melntvre Mas granted permission to take wood from the Hicks Bay Hill roadway. . A general rate of 3d in the £ was struck.
