FAMILY ALLOWANCES
AMENDMENT sought POSITION or DESERTED WIVES (Per Frees Association.) WELLINGTON, tins day. All parties were represented at a deputation of members of Parliament which waited on the Hon. W. A. Ycitch, Minister of Pensions, to urge tha. the Family Allowances Act should be amended to permit women deserted by their husbands to apply for the allowance. The Minister undertook to give the mat ter his sympathetic consideration, and to bring it before Cabinet. Mr, W, E. Barnard said that at present mothers were not allowed to apply for alloyanpe, and this made it very difficult tor wives who had been deserted. The allowance was not intended for the father, but for tlie benefit of the family. Mr. C. E, MacMillan and Mr. W. J. Jordan supported this. Mr. D. McDougall agreed with an amendment, but said many women were fond of gallivanting round and would rattier spend tlie 2s they received on a visit to the pictures than on two loaves of bread. .The Minister would have to guard against these.
