When the Palmerston North railway deviation was proposed in 1924 tlie expenditure was suggested because traffic developments at that point indicated that it would double in 12£ years. Subsequent experience has shown that this expectation lias not been fulfilled, and that crucial fact, coupled with the financial consideration, lias determined the Government in deciding in suspend work. The above statement was made by Sir Joseph Ward to day.
