LOCAL GOVERNMENT

THE BIENNIAL ELECTIONS NOMINATIONS DUE TO-MORROW Nominations will close to-morrow for the local body elections to be heJd next month in Gis'borne, and though very little interest in the possibilities of the elections has been evinced so far, it may be expected that the public will give a good deal more attention to the matter when the nominations are made public. The elections for the Mayoralty of Gisborne, the Borough Council, and the municipal representatives on the Harbor Board, Power Board, and Hospital Board, are to be held on May 1, and nominations for all the offices concerned will be received at the Borough Council chambers up to noon to-morrow, by the returning officer, Mr. 1.1. M. Porter. Tho borough is entitled to four representatives on the Harbor Board, five on the Hospital Board, and four on the Power Board, and so far as is known, there will be an election in connection with each of these local bodies, as well as for the Mayoralty and the Borough Council. The principal interest will centre, of course, upon the Mayoral campaign, inwhich the sitting Mayor, Mr. I). W. Coleman, will be opposed bv Mr. Alf W.ade. Most of the sitting councillors are expected to offer themselves for re-election, it is understood, and there are other ratepayers who have aspirations toward a seat among the councillors of the borough. The Harbor Board election is likely to arouse a good deal of attention, for criticism of the board's policy has been fairly frequent of late, though the members of the present board a,re apparently almost unanimous in support of the present chairman, Mr. W. G. jSherrafct. The Hospital Board seats will not he contested* with any warmth, judging by the present indications, but the Power Board has attracted some local body aspirants who have not previously figured in elections. Th» recent formation of the Cisborne Progress and Development. League promised to inject a little excitement into-the elections for borough representative honors, but that body determined, at its inaugural meeting, not to take anyactive part in "ticketing'" candidates for the current year. Nevertheless, it -is expected that'when the nominations are made public, to-morrow, the names of several of the younger business men of the town will appear among them.
