CAR OVER BANK

SERIOUS MISHAP AVERTED By a stroke of luck a serious accident was averted on Riverside road yesterday afternoon, when a live-seater motor-car containing Mr. H. E. Cave, of Mangatuna station, left the road and proceeded down a steep declivity before eventually coming to a standstill against a tree. Mr. Cave escaped uninjured, though extensive damage was sustained to the hood of the car. The front mudguards were slightly dented, but beyond that the vehicle received no further damage. Mr. Cave was driving towards town, and while proceeding along Riverside road shortly after 2 o’clock, lie encountered a large motor lorry on a sharp bend. The road was narrow at this particular spot, and while endeavoring to pass the lorry the outside wheels of Mr. Cave’s car went over the edge, throwing the vehicle down a steep hank. The car careered down for about 50ft. before its progress was stopped by a tree. Despite the grade of the bank, the vehicle remained in an upright position, niul struck the tree with the front portion. With the exception of a slight shock and a good shaking, Mr. Cave escaped uninjured, and immediately communicated with a garage in town for the purpose of obtaining help. Fortunately the tree, which was the only one in the vicinity, was stout enough to hold the car, preventing it from dropping a further 150 ft. into a deep gully.
