STORM WARNINGS
SHIPPING MADE SECURE WAIMATA RIVER RISING I/formation received from residents in the Waimata valley 1 his morning resulted in the issue from the harbormaster’s office of a warning to local shipping concerning the' possibility of a strong fresh in the Turanganui. It was reported that the Waimata River had risen over 10ft. at one portion ot its course through the valley, and that heavy rain throughout the night had been followed by repeated showers this morning. There was no indication, however, of a repetition of the cloud-burst which occurred last July, and which resulted in the complete silting-up of the diversion cut. Shipping at the wharves in Gisborne was warned by the harbormaster of the necessity for precautions, and a direction was given that the bgrgc gate be closed as soon ns any run becalm 1 evident in the Turanganui River. 'l'lie tide was failing during the later hours of this morning, and the bargegate was carrying a big volume ot water, but there was no indication ot the arrival in the lower rear lies of any large body of tlood waters. the work at tile training wall gap, lower down the river, has progressed during the post week to a. point' at which, owing to tlie-sliortening of 1 lie pile-heads, less opposition is offered to outflowing tidal waters, and in the event ol a moderate run in the War mat'll and Turanganui, it was not considered any trouble would be experienced. A good fresh might, even do some good in opening up the diversion cut, where efforts have been proceeding during the last few days to form a channel for the impounded tidal water.
