MENTAL DEFECTIVES

INTENTION OF LEGISLATION When the attention of the Minister of Health, Hon. A. ,1. Stallworthy, was directed to the remarks at the Science Congress of Dr. I. G. L. Sutherland, lecturer on philosophy at Victoria University College, on the subject of mental defectives, as reported in a message from Auckland, be stated that lie bad previously made a covering statement in regard to the principal case referred to. The facts were not outlined in the report of Dr. Sutherland’s speech. The Minister added that whatever criticism might be levelled against the Mental Defectives Amendment Act, it was clearly (lie intention of the Legistature to strengthen the position for a progressively satisfactory way of dealing with a difficult situation. In that direction the department was applying itself with diligence, and in a manner worthy of public confidence. Mr. Stalhvorthv mentioned in passing that the personnel of the special board to be appointed under the Act would be announced very shortly.—Dominion.
