FIRE AT COLLIERY
£40,000 DAMAGE DONE (Received Jan. 31, noon ) NEWCASTLE, Jan. 31. A fierce fire is raging at the' Northumberland colliery. Sassifern. Damage estimated at £IO,OOO lias been done already, and’ the position is becoming’ more serious hourly. The ventilating shaft and the fittings above the ground have been destroyed. Over 100 tons <d coal i.s ablaze. It is feared that blazing wood falling down the shafts will ignite the coal seams.
