AMATEUR ATHLETICS

GOOD SHOWING ON HEAVY TRACK A cold wind and occasional light showers of rain made conditions very unpleasant for athletes at th Gisborne Amateur Athletic and Harrier Club’s sports meeting held at the Childers road iv serve yesterday afternoon. Nevertlu less, the attendance was good, and some creditable performances were witnessed on the heavy track. Tlk> chief attraction was the 300yds. flat handicap for the President’s Cup. This .vent has always been recognised as one of the hardest races of the season, and conditions were made even harder yesterday afternoon on account of the sodden track and a strong head wind over th - first half of the distance. After Winning his heat in good time, O. Denton, one of the limit men, won the final by 11yds. A. D. Hollis was second, and F. McDonald third. At the conclusion of the race Mr. H. F. Forster, president of the club, presented the cup to Denton. J. Egan was the previous holder. Eleven runners contested the 100 yards ladies’ handicap, the first distance of the Norma Wilson Cup, and after two good heats Miss J. Robinson won the final, beating Miss E. Handle by lft. Miss E. Williamson was indus away, third. Owing to the javelin shaft not arriving in time, a hop, step, and jump handicap was substituted for the javelin throw. Four athletes tried conclusions, the winner being A. Lockett (9in.), who' registered a jump off 41ft. 4in. P. Kama, the scratch man, was second. He- covered a distance of 41 ft. 3Jin. The third position was filled by (5. Tiifen (Gin.), who jumped 41ft. 3in. Excitement ran high in the lj-mile cycle handicap, which was the final distance for the Rudge Cup. The path was very slippery, and the back-markers appeared' to be outclassed at any stage of the race. J. Bardswell, one cf the youngest cyclists in the club, finished first, after being strongly challenged by A. Campbell over the final 150yds. J. Mercer was third. The 011]! was presented to Balds well, who bad compiled 13 points 111 the three distances. Two interesting races between cyclists and runners were held over a distance of 100yds. In the first event, the runner, H. Martin, defeated E. Algie, cyclist, by) inches. Th© other race was won by F. Pollard, cyclist, who beat F. Martin by 2yds. The final race on the programme was Hie 440yds. ladies’ relay handicap, which was annexed by the “Dears” (Misses P. Tier, R. Hueston, J. Robinson, and E Houghton).
