DIVISION OF RIDING

THE HANGAROA DISPUTE NO FURTHER ACTION TAKEN Though an attempt was made In il.iy In upset- Ilu> previous decision u! ilie l ook Counly Council wit it respect of the division of Ihe I langiinm inline' into two portions, tin l council, by u substantial majority, decided to take, no further action, and it. was agreed to endeavor to have, the matter finalised with the Internal Affairs Department by March 31.

Since the October meeting, notice of intention to move to rescind the motion passed at that' meeting was received from Cr. W. 0. Sherratt, who formally moved in the direction at the meeting to-day. In doing so, he said lie considered (V. .M. 'l. 11. 'Hall's subdivision rather a. dangerous one, and created a position which would qfi'ool the whole county. The ncceplnnfe of Cr. Halls boundaries, possibly, would be the liyst slep lor one portion of the riding to go into.the. IV a iron Comity, and the rest nt the ridings would he saddled with the extra admiuislrative and hospital charges. If a commit fee' of disinterested people were set up to go into the matter and fix a line, there would be no •jomplaints. ( r. J. 5v .Henson seconded the motion and endorsed the proposal that the matter of boundaries should be lelt to an independent committee. (V. I'.. 11. Ikiker could imi. support the motion, as on two occasions the matter was discussed by a full council, with one except inn. and he did not think that the mehiher should mow object to the resolution carried. After "oiiversat.ioii with men alfeeted, lie had found that the main objection to the present division was on the score of represenUdion on flit' council. Ail particulars had already gone to Wellington, and any alteration in the decision would only inake t.he council "a laughing stock. lie did not flunk any mole favorable division could be scented.

. Cr. J. Toiiiblesou said il was pleasing to see tlutt the two members of the riding were now in agreement, and he congratulated them mi this f,v:t. Cr. C. (filisoii said lie was surprised at. the bogey raised regarding (lie possibililv of the Tiuiroto portion seceding to Waiioa. "If we. wind to force them to go into Wniroii we are going the right way a hold it, *he added. A lew \ ears a.,T ( > {here was serious consideration to join Wairoa, caused, lie said, on account of the. treatment those people bad received. lint lie did not think there was auv smh dissatisfaction now. If the motion now before the meeting were caVried. it would lie a lever lo form Tiuiroto into I lie Wairoa County. Cr. Hal! : 1 object very strongly to Cr. Hlierratt's notice of motion. Cr. llali added he had sent his notice, of motion to Cr. Sherratt, who, without, any additional consideration since (V. Hall s motion had been carried, had sent in a motion to rescind the previous agreement. The chairman. Cr. Chas. Matthews, opposed I lie motion, saying that the matter of riding 'boundaries had no hearing on the suggestion of Tiuiroto wishing to join Wairoa. The line decided on was quite a fair one, and if any ratepayers were dissatisfied they had the right of appeal to the Minister, and if. that tailed a.' ratepayer could still bring his case before the council for adjustment. The motion was lost on the voices. Cr. ITall said lie would like to see the matter finalised before March 31. He wished to enlist the support of the Hon. K. S. Williams to use his influence with the Internal Affairs Department to have the matter finalised before March 31. Cr. Hall’s suggestion was adopted.
