For what must surely be .the first time in Hie history of trade unionism, :iu Americau union has elected one of its leaders to the position of President emeritus for life, with an. income of £2OOO a year.
Recognising his desire .to retire on account of ill-health but unwilling to lose altogether his services, the Bricklayers, Masons, and Plasterers' International Vnion has granted this unique appointiiient to their president, Mr. William J. Bowon. lie lias served the union tor 25 years, and ih appreciation of his services members voted that his salary be continued, although liia duties will bo nominal,
