FLAT RATE OF FREIGHT
OPPOSITION TO ABOLITION At a meeting of the Nelson Harbor Board, a letter was received- from the secretary of the Wanganui Harbor Board drawing attention to a recent resolution passed by the Wellington board to set up a committee of inquiry into the present system of a. tint rate'of freight from New Zealand to the United Kingdom, "with the idea, of course." said the letter, "of obtaining its abolition. "The Wanganui Board is of opinion that is is only another move in the direction of centralising shipping at the mam ports," continued theftetter. The chairman, Mr. 11. R. Duncan, said the question was first raised in 1926, when it was contended that the delay caused through the overseas vessels having to call a*" a number of smaller ports taused the shipping companies to raise their freights. The coastal ports had spent an enormous amount of money in making serviceable harbors, and it was not fair that these harbors should be asked to give up their facilities or make thorn non-interest bearing Mr. Duncan moved the following motion, which was carried unanimously: "That this board is strongi'.y against any attempt, being made to divert overseas trade from this norf or any other port of New Zealand."
