THE fortnightly meeting ■ The fortnightly meeting Of the Gisborne Borough Council, was held lastevening, the Mayor, Hr.' D.. \A. Coleman, presiding. There were also present: Crs. J. Blair, JL -. & 'Mattde, JW. IL Holmes, G. Bradley Smith, H. J. Kerridge, \V. Cave, and F. Collin. Air. C. Hawkins wrote requesting thata'large and handsome tree on the opppy site side of the road in front of his property near the intersection ;of Derby street and Childers road be allowed to remain.—lt was decided to'advise Mr. Hawkins that the’council had no intention of removing the tree at present. - Messrs. W. H. Smith and Co. Ltd., were granted permission to establish a wool, hide, and skin store in Roebuck load. ' •Mr. G. W. Hilton wrote consenting to the council running a pipe drain through - his property in upper Fox street.—Received. The Gisborne' branch of the Women’s National Reserve applied for permission to hold a street sore of flowers on Saturday, September I.—Granted. The secretary of the Waiteata Park | Beautifying Association advised that, at

! a. recent meeting of the association it I was resolved that £5 be derated to the • unemployment fund to be’ expended on i labor at the park. ' Permission was granted to Mr. R. J. Mortimer to erect a kerbside petrol pump in Bright street-. ' Air. r. R. Stevens wrote applying for ' ■ permission to broadcast, a description of ' the Heenev-Tuimey world heavyweight 1 championship fight on Friday afternoon. 1. —Granted subject to. the regulation of ,the traffic by the trade.; inspector and - the police. The licensee of the Masonic hotel applied for permission; to broadcast, the description of the fight from the balcony of his bo tty,-.—Granted. A petition was received from eight residents of Dytton road and the Te -Hapara Tennis Club requesting the construction of a footpath to give access to their properties on the eastern side of the road from Gladstone voud to a point about 50 yards beyond the corner lof Bulwer road.—Referred to the engineer. . A petition was received, from 20 residents in the vicinity of. Hie Botanical Gardens requesting that sonic of the large trees in the gardens be either topped or removed. During the winter months this area was particularly damp, and no- sunshine could find its, way through the trees. —Referred to the reserves committee. ■ _ Alessrs. Chrisp and Chrisp wrote, stating that the time within which any petition could be lodged having now expired ' they could proceed with the application to the Public "Works Department for the revocation order. REPORTS ENGINEER’S! DEPARTMENT. ' The engineer, Air. A. Young, reported, inter alia:— ’“Upper Aberdeen road* footpath, Lytton.road to Albert street: This work was finished ou July 9. “Unemployment relief works: (1) Awilpimi read reserve.-—Tree planting is in progress and*will continue lor. another w’cek or so; number of men employed, five. (2) Cook Aleinoriul and Kait-l beach improvement.—A start has been made enlarging the area around the memorial, and this involves the shifting of the present roadway 10ft nearer to the septic tank. Provisional approval for this Work lias been granted by the Public Works Department. Number of men employed, six: and it is expocteu to increase this number to 10 when the work is more advanced. (3) Further relief works.—-Preparations are in hand to engage relief labor in' connection with fho Haiti stormwater drainage recently decided upon by the Borough Council and the Cook County Council, and it is hoped that actual construction v\ ill he commenced almost innnediateiv.

“Alaki street: The approaches to Aiaki street at Wainui road and Entone road have been constructed in waterhound macadam. This work was completed on July 19.

“Footway upper Gladstone rood, Lyiton road to the large culvert: The work of formation to permanent level is in train.

“Footpath paving: It is proposed# to reconstruct the footpath around Adair Bros.’ building in Lowe street and to pavo with Laykold. The existing footpath requires regrading, and the proposed class of pavement is adopted because it can be done under cold'weather conditions. Also, it is proposed to surface the footpath around Townley’s Building with- similar material. The present footpath requires a surface finish and will be. treated as a test piece. “Upper Fox street loan : Sewerage construction work is making good progress and that section in Fox street proper is almost completed. In connection with the water reticulation work tenders have been called for the necessary cast iron pipes and fittings. “Stormwater drainage loan : As money is now available for the continuation of the programmo of stormwater drainage originally drawn up it is proposed to tackle the more urgent works first.. These would bo, as previously mentioned, the area around Herbert road and Roebuck road, and also in the vicinity of the ’intersection of Stanley road and Childers road. In connection with these works the Huma Pipe Co., has been eommum cated- with to commence the manufacture, locally, of the required pipes. “Quarterly programme of works: The proposed works of a major character for the quarter, July-Scplembcr, are repaving of Palmerston road in waterbound macadam, and tar scaled as and when funds are available. The cost of this work will be £6O per .chain approximately.” • WORKS COMMITTEE. The works committee reported, inter alia:— “Tenders for C.I pipes: Four tenders wero received for the supply of 10 tons of water mains for Fox street reticulation, and were handed over to the engineer for recommendation. “Waste land: In respect to the acquisition of a small piece of land on the riverbank at Stafford street, it rvas decided to recommend that the* taking of same under the Public Works Act be not completed owing to the East Coast Commissioner demanding compensation, as same would bo of no value to tho council. “In respect to ;u claim for £1 from a Kaiti resident it was decided to pay the amount.” FINANCE COAIAHTTEE. The finance committee reported:— “Your committee have to report that the. question of purchasing a National office register, electrically operated, was considered, ancl it was agreed to recommend that a machine as offered be purchased at the price of £282, payment to be made in April, and the machine to be delivered in. complete working order eafly in March next.” INSPECTION COMMITTEE The inspection committee reported : “Street Lighting: Your committee’s attention was drawn to a street lariip situated in the centre of Cheescman road, and after inspecting the site we have to recommend that same bo removed to the corner intersected by Coleman street, by so doing the benefits received from tho lamp will be much greater. “Alaki Street : General improvements have been effected at tho intersections of this road* with both Wainui and’ Ruleno roads, and suitable iootways are under construction. ; “Unemployed Relief Works are in progress, tree-planting in the abattoir re--serve, Awapuni road, and general improvement work surrounding tho Cook monument, Kaiti beach road.

“Upper Fox Street Area: SfeWage and waterworks loan works are under construction in this area,, and are progressing satisfactorily. • ■ • “Footway, Upper Gladstone road : The engineer reported that tin's work was well in hand and would shortly bo completed.” ; ‘ The reports were adopted.
