DEMAND FOR CLOTHING

# RELIEVING DISTRESS i CHARITABLE AGENCIES BESIEGED (Special to the Herald.) AUCKLAND, this day. All the city charitable agencies were besieged again yesterday by scopes of men, women, and children in quest of clothing from the recent “ drive.” Further huge quantities were distributed, but the work of sorting and bestowing the public’s gifts will go on for many days vet. The worst crush was at the Methodist City Mission. Its premises were invaded by crowds, estimated at 500people of both sexes and of all ages. So eager were the applicants that a large pane of glass m tne Sunday school porch was pushed out on the heads of the people below. Apparently no harm was done. It is quite evident from, what has happened in the past few days that a number of families in Auckland hairb been able to pay their rent and food bills, but have been unable to buy clothing. Most of these so far have been unknown to charitable workers. U nfortunately, some of them have taken rather a high-handed line with the dispensers of gifts, as if the clothing were their own property already and the business of the charitable aid folk was to hand it over without delay. There is no organisation to prevent applicants from going from one depot to another, and undoubtedly many are doing so. It seems impossible to prevent that, however, even if some are getting more than their share. Most of the clothing will be put to good use in the long run.
