Messrs. F. Brown, J. McKinley, J. A. Nicol and K. Logan, of the Public Works Department staff at Mangaore, have received word of their transfer to Arapuni, Waikaremoana, Horohoro, and Wellington respectively. Another New Zealander has reached the ranks of stardom on the Australian stage. Lance Fairfax, formerly of Wellington, has been engaged by J. C. Williamson, Ltd., to play juvenile lead in “The Desert Song” and “Hit the Deck.” He was last over here with the Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company, and will he remembered for his beautiful singing voice and excel lent acting. Mr. Fairfax served with the Canterbury Regiment during the war, and received an engagement with the firm when he returned from the front. Bound on an Empire tour, Sir John Russell, director of the Rothamsted Experiment Station, JSitgland, will arrive at Auckland on July 31. He plans to spend 18 days in New Zealand examining various phases' of agricultural problems. After two days in Auckland Sir John Russell will leave on August 3 for Hamilton. On the following day he will visit the Government experimental farm at Mamuka and will later proceed to Rotorua. Other places to he visited comprise Palmerston North, Wellington, Nelson, and various South Island centres. He, will leave New Zealand on 'August 18. Sir John is at present making an intensive tour of Australia.
A large deputation, representing Waitakarimi, Pipiroa, Ngatea, Hopai, Kaihei'e and Tovehape, assembled at Ngatea to ask Mr. Ernest Walton, barrister and solicitor, of Ngatea, to ,accept nomination in the Reform Party’s interests* as a candidate for the Hanraki electorate at tlie forthcoming election. Mr. Walton, after thanking the meeting for its demonstration of confidence in him. safd that he could not do other than bow to the wish of the people among whom he had lived during the past eight, years. He accepted nomination and briefly stated his views politically. Up to the present three Reform candidates are m the field, namely, Air. Ernest Walton, of Ngatea; Air. Arthur Hall, of Papatoet.oe; and Air. S. House, of Alangere. All three intend going -to, a ballot of Reform League delegates, when the successful candidate will receive the official approval of the Reform Party, and the unsuccessful two will withdraw from the contest.
