COUNCILLOR'S AMBITION
"WOULD SWEEP EVERY CABARET OFF EARTH" "If I. wore commissioned to reform humanity, 1 would first swoop every cabaret off the faee of the earth." Mr. J. Guiniveii confessed to this in moving at a meeting of Iho Takapuna Borougli Council that a previous resolution granting ;t license for bathing sheds and a cabaret at Mil ford Beach, on certain conditions, should lie rescinded. He suggested that the council should refuse all future applications for the establishment of cabarets in the borough. The protests of Protestant clergymen were mentioned. "These gentlemen and their following comprise about SO per cent, of the population," said Mr. Guiniven. "Their views should carry a great deal of weight. There are a number of organisations in the borough which are a credit to Ihe community, and they are all emphatic in their contention that a cabaret is a source of serious temptation to the young people. You will have cartloads of bad characters coming into the district. It is not fair that we few should force temptation into the midst of our young men and women. "It is as impossible to control a cabaret by regulation as to control drinking. The only way for both is complete prohibition." The motion was supported by Cr. J. Davis, who stated that he had received information from a very reliable source that the cabaret would be used largely for "sly-grog soiling." The remainder of the council voting against the motion, it was lost.
