Mr. lrf. H. DeCosta, of Gisborne,. left this morning to attend the A.M.P. annual conference, to be held in Wellington. Following the decision of Mr. E. Walter, the sitting member, to stand against Mr. J. B. lline, a former member who consented to nomination on the understanding that Mr. Walter was not standing, Mr. lline has decided to withdraw his nomination for the Stratford seat.—P. A. A large number of musicans and prominent citizens assembled yesterday afternoon to welcome Mr Alfred O'Shea, the Irish tenor, on his arrival in Gisborne. Mr S. V. Boaufoy, on behalf of the musicians, extended a hearty welcome to the visitor. Mr. Scott Colvill, manager of the tour, suitably replied, while Mr O'Shea briefly' thanked Mr Boaufoy nnd the musicans for their welcome. His departure from Christ church having been facilitated by bis late employers, the ChristcTuireh Drainage. Board, Mr. F. Marshall Smith, the newly appointed engineer to the Gisborne Harbor Board, will take, up his duties here as from Thursday of this week. 'When Mr. Smith's resignation was placed before the Christchurch board, members expressed appreciation of bis past servicec, and resolved that everything possible be done to facilitate his acceptance of his new appointment. The administration of the Gisborne harbor has been conducted, since the departure of Mr. 11. W. Fulton, by the, secretary, Mr. 11. A. Barton, and the overseer, Mr. K. McLeod, and for this limited period at least a section oi the Harbor Board has seen the realisation oT its plea that the construction be placed under an experienced and practical works overseer.
