SLAVES IN THE 'TRIANGLE'

LIBERATION COMPLETED * ALLAHABAD, March 2. The Pioneer's correspondent reports that the expedition under Mr. J. T. Barnard, Deputy Commissioner, Burma Frontier Police, which is working in two parties in the area on tho Burma frontier that lies between the head waters of the Irrawaddy, known as the "Triangle," has completed the release of slaves in those areas in which the work remained unfinished owing to the punitive operations undertaken against the Lnlipai tribe last year. All slaves in the "Triangle" have now been set'free.

The expedition is inquiring into the condition of slaves who were liberated last year and are now settled in the area." So far it has received a friendly reception everywhere. This is the third expedition which Mr J. T. Barnard has led into the territories of Northern Burma, following Sir Harcourt Butler's durbar, held a'i Maingkwan, in the heart of the Hulcawng Valley, in January, 1925, in which the Governor of Burma first gave tho chiefs to understand that slavery must he abolished. Some 4000 slaves have been released altogether and over £20,000 has been distributed in compensation. The punitive operations were made necessary by the ambushing and murder by 'Kac'hins of Captain West, who led an advance party of the expedition to the "Triangle" last year.
