ECONOMIG CONFERENCES FRUITLESS GENEVA, Nov. 3. _ Dr. Laur, chief of the Federal Agricultural Department at Berne, writes a somewhat sarcastic a/rticic in a local paper concerning international economic conferences. He states that at the last economic conference held in Geneva in May the delegates voted many excellent resolutions, and went to their homes satisfied with ‘themselves. Since then, he adds, nearly every country in Europe and America lias raised its tariff on certain categories of imports, or intends to do so. America has placed an extra tax or. cheese, Germany on sugar 'and potatoes, Austria on cheese, while Spain intends to denounce its commercial treaties and France is preparing a higher tariff wall. Finally, Switzerland has prepared a project to raise the duty on imported motor cars. The present international conference for the abolition of import and export ■restrictions, however, continues its sessions, and similar futile results are anticipated.
