MEDICAL RESEARCH
ACTIVITY IN ENGLAND NEW ZEALANDER’S IMPRESSIONS (Special to the Herald.) AUCKLAND, this day. “ I really think New Zealand is keeping abreast of all the observations made at Home in medical matters, and that Great Britain is holding its own in most respects, and in some cases excelling any other country,” said Dr. Claude Coldicutt, of Auckland, who has returned .from abroad. Dr. Coldicutt said a great deal of active work was being done in England and Scotland in connection with tuberculosis, as a result of the enterprise of health’ departments. Ho was particularly impressed by the number of tuberculosis medical officers holding positions in the cities, this being an indication that a very well-organised campaign was being made against disease. Sufferers were being treated in eai’lier stages than ever before, and for that reason much better success was obtained. Another work that had been well taken up in the last few years, said Dr. Coldicutt, was that which concerned the welfare of infants and children, and (lie instruction of mothers. Nearly all the city corporations had their own welfare departments, generally with several, medical officers and trained assistants attached. The instruction was mainly for the poorer people, and there were regular clinics at which mothers were given demonstrations. Trained assistants also visited the houses. Dr. Coldicutt attended tho annual conference of the British Medical Association at. Edinburgh, and remarked that although much cancer research was being carried on no items of special interest in regard to it were brought forward at the conference, and there was a feeling that nothing of a definite nature would be heard in the immediate future.
