SOUTHERLY GALE
DAMAGE AT WELLINGTON (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, .this day. A southerly gale raged last night, with heavy rain, and continues this morning. The railway lino along the harbor was partly washed out and the trains blocked for some time. Shipping was interfered with and the telegraph lines interrupted. A motor lorry Avas blown Over oh Queen 's Drive. Much damage was done to gardens. This blow is worse "than any last winter and is in keeping with the weather all this month, which has been far more like winter than spring. The rainfall is nearly double the average. Telegraphic communication between Napier and Gisbornc was re-establish-ed shortly after noon to-day, and it has .been ascertained that at least one of the causes of the stoppage was a break near Morere,, all of the wires having •been snapped off. Reports from that 'direction state that there was a very heavy gale on Wharerata hill, and although no definite cause has yet been assigned for the breaks, it is thought that the heavy wind might have been too much for ono of the poles.
