AUSTRALIAN STEEL
WORKS MAY CLOSE DOWN CRIPPLING COMPETITION (Received Nov. 18, noon.) SYDNEY, Nov. IS. Owing to recent importations of structural and merchant steel from England at prices which defy local competition, grave fears at present are. entertained regarding the future of the Broken Hill Proprietary Co.'s works at Newcastle. For ninny months a steady falling oh' in orders has been experienced. Already the services of several hundred men have been dispensed with, and it now has been decided to close down part of the works. It' is estimated when this is put into effect next Saturday considerably over J 000 men will have been put. off.
