LYTTELTON TUNNEL

ELECTRIFICATION SCHEME NEW FUEL NO SUBSTITUTE (Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day.

It was with a view to avoiding what he described as the enormous expenditure on the electrification of the Lyttelton tunnel that Mr. J. R. Hamilton called the attention of the Minister of Railways to the satisfactory tests of smokeless fuel prepared in New Zealand.

Tho Minister has replied that the fuel advisory , board has carried out certain trials of fuel produced by the Smokeless Fuel Co., Ltd., Christchurch. These investigations, although not yet complete, have demonstrated that there is an absence of smoko in the progress of the combustion of the fuel referred to. .The hot fumes given off with the locomotive exhaust are, of course, not eliminated on engines burning the special fuel, and complete avoidance ot: tho unpleasantness complained of by passengers travelling through the Lyttelton tunnel can be attained most effectively by electrification.

“While the smoke nuisance has an important bearing on the decision to inaugurate the electrification of suburban lines an important consideration is the necessity which exists for accelerating passenger and goods services on the Christchureh-Lyttelton section.”
