POVERTY BAY HOUNDS

(By "Snaffles.")

Perhaps one of the most strenuous days enjoyed this season was Saturday I last, when the hounds, met at the poio-, paddock gate. , . ( A large held turned out-, and it is Very gratifying to note the increasing number of fresh faces that keep appearing at the meets this season, indicative as | they are of the increasing popularity of this sport. The dav itself felt like a good hunting day "from the first thing in the morning, being' dull and grey with the air coot and damp, as though it wanted to rain but could not. '•■ ■ A hare went straight away from Bell's orchard and the hounds came right out close-behind her to rattle her really fast over the polo paddock, across the old saleyards, and away down to the river beyond "the stock road, where she. tinned left-handed. They then ran her on behind the Bridge hotel, bringing her buck over a nice line to Fuller's forge, leaving the orchard on her left, over the Bushmere road and almost up to the Makauri road opposite the old Km Ora factory, where she was viewed dodging back to the railway line, up which she ran to the road at the Makaraka level crossing. She must have squatted either in the rough grass alongside the railway or in one of the adjoining maize paddocks, and was given lip. I Jogging back to the polo paddock again a hare went away from the next paddock and she was destined to pro- j vide an hunt.. She led the hounds at a fast pace over the old saleyards and across the stock road almost to the river, where she turned , right-handed. The hounds ran on past Mr Ewen Cameron's house, over the p main Bushinorc road and then straight ( away to the Makauri store, where they . checked. Casting round! behind Mr. Moitleman's house they hit it off again, | and away they went parallel to the Waerenga-a-hik'a road, beating the horses all the way, as the pace here was- "a real cracker" for a bit. The hounds raced on past Mr W. R. Scott's house, where they turned short lefthanded and, went on, still running hard, to the Bushmere road opposite Pouparaewhere, amongst the heavy sfain of sheep she beat them. This was a really tiptop hunt all the way, the only check being at the Makauri store, and this was only of short duration. ' Mrs r.addum and Mrs Sherratt then provided tea at the polo pavilion, which was heartily enjoyed by all, and then a move was made to try tor another hare. One was snort on foot near the old saleyards, and she gave a pretty hunt out over the back country and down to the river, 'where the hounds killed her. Finding again near this spot, tha hounds, ran out over the stock road near the Bridge hotel, and kept- left-handed, leaving Mr. Judd's house on their right and back, over the old yards and stock road, straight across to the river, where she turned left-handed again, to the

orchard behind" the' hotel aid ran by the' front of Mr Arnaboldi's paddock, -where they checked at the head of the bridge. All efforts to, recover her line having ~ failed and the horses being all more or less "cooked," the master g*V6 ■ theordef for home. , A significant indication cf the oouiH; try and the pace the hounds crossed it was provided by the array of muddy coats that turned that evening on their [ homeward ways rejoicing. i ■« •
