TOTAL EXCEEDS £56,000,000

OUTLAY ON UiNOPENED LINES

Capital expenditure on the New Zealand railways at March 31, 1927, amounted to £56,028,477, according to the valuation published in the Gazette. This represents an increase during the year of £2,312,0214.

The cost of the 3181 miles of opened lines is now £149,183,916, an increase of £1,575,240. wilich includes the cost of construction of 43 miles added to the working railways during Ihe year. Expenditure on railways remaining in the hands of the Public Works' Department totals ±56,844,661 as against £6,107,779 in the previous year. The capital cost of the North Island main lines and branches, 1316 miles, is now £24,770.638, an increase during trie .year of ±51,187,060. That of the South Island main linos and branches, 1618 miles, is ±521,219,376. an increase of £288,666. The capital' cost of the Nelson section 64 miles, has been increased by ±5135.288 to £582,796. The greater part of the expenditure on unopened linos is in the North Island, uncompleted sections of the main line system representing ±54,244,487; the Tnurangn section £1,407,081—an increase of ±570,660—and the Oisborne section £716,961—an increase of ±518,246.
