CANTERBURY PRODUCE MARKET. CHRISTCHURCH, June 24. Potatoes are taking the chief place of interest in tin* gram and produce trade. The report that Auckland merchants had contracted for the delivery a week or two lienee of 300 tons of Tasmanian tubers has stirred some merchants'- and farmers’ organisations into protest. In the. meantime Auckland is the base of potatoes to the extent, that wharf prices there are quite 10s a ton ahead of the parity of f.o.b. S.L prices at Lyttelton. From £7 to £7 5s lias, been paid tins week ex wharf, yet £5 is barely available here. Northern merchants are filling requirements from consignments. The strongest part of the market ot the moment are “prompts,” which arc quoted at £5 f.o.b. S.l. July’s have, eased to £5 12s 6<l, and August-Soptembers to £6, the tone being weak in spite of a general idea that the crop will eventually yield a lower average per acre than for some years. Growejs arc being quoted about £3 17s 6d on trucks. A remarkable feature about the market is the. demand for Dakotas. These have bc.cn sold to Wellington, which centre lias shown a strong preference for this variety, at £6 10s f.o.b. 5.1., or 25s a ton more than the reputedly; superior white variety. The absence of a boat to Auckland this week Has shortened supplies there, hut the Wiugatui is due to sail early in the week, and will probably take about BCOO sacks. A considerable quantity of this cargo will be completed from store, indicating that country deliveries are light.

The wheat, market has quietened down. There have been a few purchases during the week at 5s lOd on trucks at midway stations for Tuscan, and Hunters’ 6s 3d. The figure asked for Tuscan is 6s, but this is on the high side at the moment for •business. Oats are weaker, due to tho change in the Australian climatic conditions, which is bound to alTcct export. A Cartons are quoted at 3s f.o.b. 5.1., and 3s dd in the south; IPs 3s l^d. CHICAGO WHEAT PRICES ,'Eloc. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Australian and N’.Z.
