DOG TRIALS
GISBORNE CLUB’S MEET: GRATIFYING ENTRIES The entries for the annual trials of the Gisborne Sheep Dog Trial Club, which commenced at Kaiti to-day, were gratifyingly large, and there was a considerable degree of interest 'evinced by “doggy” men in the outcome of the various classes. In the lirst class, which should he Uni silt'd by noon to-morrow, there were over tif) entries, including most of (lie prize-winners at recent trials in the country districts. The organisation of the meeting was up to the usual good standard, and the course, though a little tricky, was generally approved by the competitors, .\tr. W. Whyte, ot Greenmondows, Napier, officiated as judge, aiql Mr. Williams, of Wanganui, an enthusiast whose visit to Gisborne coincided with the holding the meet,
agreed to accept the post of timekeeper. The sheep, a line strong type, were loaned to the club by -Mr. Thos. Holden, of Kimuroa, and the competitors could not have been better suited in regard to the stock. A feature of the early work to-day was the comparatively poor quality of the runs made in the long head by dogs of whom first-class work was expected. This was commented on by many officials and others who knew the majority of the dogs well, and had watched their work at other trials. There was nothing to account for the peculiarity, but it was siirprisring to find so many dogs running “wild” on the same day. II was expected that later they would produce more credit, able form.
