FILM INDUSTRY
AMERICAN BUSINESS METHODS MELBOURNE, June 15. Britain is at last making a definite effort to throw off the shackles of tho American moving-picture combine, and an Empire film scheme- has been evolved. The Australian branch has already been formed in Melbourne, the Lord Mayor, Sir Stephen Morell, being one of tho shareholders iu this branch. During the formation of the company, now known as British- Dominions Films Pty., Ltd. (says the Age), it is learnt from an authoritative source that the American interests employed various methods of intimidation against those who were subscribing capital to the company. It is certainfy very much to tho credit of the shareholders that they ignored the subtle threats levelled against them, pad subscribed money to a patriotic concern which will, of course, be run on proper business lines. The power of the American film interests may bo judged from .the fact that this form of intimidation was used against a citizen who is well known for his intensely pro-British sentiments.
