BRITISH COMPANIES' STRUGGLE s LONDON, June 5. What may prove on© of the most bitter and intense struggles ever fought by competitive British shipping companies has commenced. T/he whole trade between Britain and the Continent and South African ports is involved, and the freight rates war may spread elsewhere. The South African competition is caused by the formation of the, BritishContinental and South African Line, of which Sir Robert Thomas, M.P. for Anglesey, is head, and which will utilise Camprian liners to maintain a monthly service, and will offer substantially reduced rates on certain classes of cargo.
Other lines have reduced their rates by an average of SO per cent., with an even bigger cut on some cargoes.
