LONG-DISTANCE FLYING

* ENGLISHMEN SEEK RECORD EARLY START LIKELY (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, Juno 10. In view of the fact that seven petrol tanks caused an air lock in the course of switching over to the last tank, this is considered the most likely cause of compelling Lieuts. Carr and Gillman to descend. Under such circumstances pilots are helpless. Experiments carried out with duplicate machines seem to strengthen this possibility. <. Shouldthe weather be good a start will be made on a new attempt to create a non-stop record from the Cromwell aerodrome. Already a new machine has been taken up with a ( load of six tons. Mechanical alterations render failure from the same cause impossible.

MACHINE UNDER TEST DEFECTS OVERCOME (British Official Wireless.) Ree. noon. , " LONDON, -June 10. The aeroplane in which a new attempt will be made to fly without' stop to Karachi, a distance' of 4100 miles, was being tested to-day at Brooklands prior to proceeding to Cranwell aerodrome, whence the start for India will be made as soon as the weather is favorable. It is continued that Plight-Lieut. Carr

will again be the pilot. Flight-Lieut. | (Jil'.man, who navigated in the previous attempt, will, to his great disappoint- j ment, be unable to take part in the new venture for domestic reasons. Lieut. Gut's companion will be Flight-Lieut. Hack worth, Who has had very consldera! le experience in long-distance flights, and was one of those who flew from Cairo to Captown and back last year.

For several days men have been at work to prevent any such mishaps as that which caused Lieutenants Carr and Gillman to come down in the Persian Gulf in the previous attempt', namely an airlock in the petrol suoply. A new petrol system anil new fdter have been installed, and it is regarded as certain that similar trouble will not occur.

TRANS-TASMAN FLIGHT AN AUSTRALIAN WILLING MELBOURNE, Juno 10. Charles Pratt, who, with his brother, established a factory for manufacturing aircraft at Geelong, announces his willingness to fly to New Zealand if a suitable aeroplane is provided. He is prepared to go to England at his own expense, and take delivery of the machine if financial backing for the flight is found.

CHAMBERLAIN'S AMBITION ROUND-THE-WORLD NON-STOP FLIGHT (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) BEiILIN, Juue 9. "A round-the-world non-stop 30,000 mile flight is not imposible," declared Oapt. Chamberlin. *'l hope some cue will offer me £250,000 to play with, so that I can construct a suitable 'plane." FLIGHT RESUMED DE PINEDO'S VENTURE (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Received June 11, 11 a.m.) HORTA (Azores), June .10. The Marchese Be Pinedo has resumed his flight. He retraced his path to the Island of Flores—where ho was forced down—after which he planned to turn the plane about and proceed making two stops, the first'at Ponta Delgada, the largest town in the Azores, and the second at Lisbon.
