THE SOUTHERN RAILWAY.
(To the Editor of the Herald.) Sir, —As there is some discussion at the present time regarding the different routes the southern railway should take, and also in many quarters there is a doubt whether the enormous expense of construction is justified in this age of motor transport, I venture to offer the following suggestion for what it is worth : (1) That the Government should be asked to assist, in the construction of a "real" harbor for Gisborne in lieu of a. railway. (2) That the present line terminating at Waikokopu should be continued a few miles, to the northern or the Gisborne side of the Mahia isllmiUß. (5) A ferry service could be run with suitable steamers from Gisborne wharf connecting with the train at Mahia in, say, two hours, perhaps less. —Yours, etc., TALL OAKS' FKOM LITTLE ACORNS GliOW.
