MOTORING MISHAP.

(To the, Editor of the Herald.) Sir,—ln your issue of the 7th ult. a letter was' published from Mr. John Tombleson concerning a collision we had at Fuller's blacksmith shop, and as your correspondent inferred that the cause of the accident was an error of judgment oii my part, and' has altogether given an incorrect impression as to what happened, I would thank your to now publish my version as to what actually did occur. I was making for Ngatapa, via, Bell's orchard, whilst my poetic friend was making for town from Muriwai district, an.l I was already on the crossing (although not on the bitumen) when Mr. Tombleson signalled jit the water trough that he was turning up towards the, saleyards. I contend that any driver could see my intention was to go straight ahead, and as my tracks showed ,an undeviating line on my proper side for two chains back from where Hie collision took place, it is altogether wrong for Mr. Tombleson to say that I took a turn to the left as if going towards the saleyards. I may say my tracks wore inspected and measurements taken by a witness to the accident, who can substantiate what I write. Another error in his letter is in regard to my remark after alighting from my car, when he alleges I said: " I saw your signal; why didn't you slacken up and let me get on my proper side." What I actually did say was: "What the devil are you doing here," and as. for getting on my proper side, I was never anywhere else, and, moreover, the ae» cident occurred 'on my proper side. Had Mr. Tombleson stuck to his proper side and taken a full swing around the corner and on the crown of the road, instead of cutting the corner, there would have been no accident. There arc other discrepancies in his letter on which I could write, but which I think it is unnecessary to comment upon However, I think it only right that after such a letter as his being published, it is only right that the facts • should be put forward. —I am, etc., * ALBERT SMITH,
