BIG LAWN TENNIS YEAR

£33,-0 SEAT MONEY RETURNED

A MEN’S WIMBLEDON

LONDON, April 6.

'j’lipre is no doubt tbut tins is going’ to bo a great lawn tennis year. I Ins is evidenced bv the booking of seats lor the lawn tennis championships at Wimbledon, which begin on June 20. Already the All-England Club have returned'£33,ooo to unsuccessful applicants in the ballot for reserved seats round the centre courts. Tickets will be posted tins week to those who were successful in obtaining seats. There were a larger number of applicants tins year than m any previous year, notwithstanding the fact that Mile. Lenglen, who undoubtedly has been a great attraction, is not now eligible to compete as she is a professional. Interest is centred in the men’s events. W. T. Tilden, who leaves the United States on April 23, is going to try to wrest the hard court championship of France from if. Laooste and the championship at Wimbledon from J. llorotra. It will he recalled that Tilden held the national championships of the United States from 1920 to 1925, and was beaten last year by H. Cochet, another brilliant French player, in the fourth round. The French team will include the well-knowii quartet llorotra, Lncost'ie, Cochet, and J. llrugnon. Australia is sending (1. Patterson,. who won at Wimbledon in 1919 and 1922, South Africa have L, Raymond and J. Condon, both of whom on their best day are equal to heating anybody. The (Hermans are entering for the first time since the war. With all these champions competin'’ there are sure to be some “needle” matches such ns have not been seen before. The women’s events should prove interesting because Mrs. (lodfree will have ns her challengers S.enonta d’Alvarez, the Spanish champion who was defeated in the final last year, Miss Rvan, and women players from South Africa who have done so well against the British women’s team sent there this venr.
