DESTRUCTION BY SHAGS (Special to the Herald.) AUCKLAND, this day. ‘‘lt is the Government’s duty to offer a reward for the killing of shags,” said Mr. C. A. Whitney at a meeting of the council of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society. Mr. Whitney went oil to say that shags ate three times their own weight in fish a day. As fast as those inland wore shot others came from the sea. He had seen as many as 500 shags in one flock at Taupo. Shags were a national menace, and a universal reward should be offered for their destruction. He thought the Acclimatisation Society members should do more toward eliminating the pest by periodical shag shoots.
The destructive habits of hawks on feathered game life were also referred to . Mr. Whitney said he had recently seen 30 hawks in one field at Inchfield.
