Beyers, K.C., the Minister of Mines, speaking in thir Assembly to-day, said that 1926 was the best year the gold mines had ever had, and that the industry had not yet reached its zenith. He was glad to say that the present Government mining engineer took a far more favorable view of the future of the Witwatersrand than that suggested by' Sir Robert Kotze in his report on the subject. The Government, he continued, were anxious to establish the iron and steel industry while the gold mine 3 were stil going at full They were so convinced that it -was essential for the future of the country that they would _see it through, even though, contrary to expectation, private investors refused to participate. The Minister insisted that the new industry would be run on purely business lines. The provisions regarding Government control were intended purely as a safeguard.
