CAPTIVE SHARKS

IN SYDNEY AQUARIUM. SYDNEY, April 1. Visitors to Sydney can now see, in the new aquarium at the'' World-famed Taronga Park, types of the man-eating sharks which infest local waters. There are about seven sharks in the aquarium, where, though the aquarium has not yet been officially opened, Sydneysiders may now view with perfect equanimity vigorous young monsters whose species have taken such a tragic toll of life along Sydney’s beaches. The aquarium, however, Only a day or two ago Was cheated of what would have been its prize shark, a tjypiqal, man-eater nearly 14ft. in length. It was hooked in the harbor, after a big battle, and, wrapped in a tarpaulin, was placed on a lorry and transported as quickly as possible to the aquarium. The struggle, however, which it put up to regain its freedom told its tale, for it had not been in the aquarium loug. when it died. At Taronga Park, on the slopes and among the rocks overlooking the harbor, the animals and birds arc housed under conditions approximating as nearly as possible to the natural. This applies, within safe limits, of. course, events, to the sharks, which sport abqgt in water which has been pumped from, the harbor.
