(Herald Correspondent). The Faiera is expected daily from Westport with a cargo of timber. The auxiliary schooner Huanui is to arrive soon from New Plymouth, with plant for the proposed oil boring operations at Morera The maize crops in this district are likely to he very disappointing. Owing to the excessively wet summer the plants have not grown to halt the usual height and are cobbing very badly. .In some sections .where cultivation was not properly carried out. some of the crops do not exceed a height of 31t. Maize requires plenty of sun and a medium supply of rain, and for the same, reason the tomato crops has been practically a failure. Mr. John Gemmell, who farmed the Kiwi estate, ami who was member and chairman of the County Council, is on a visit to bis father and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Gemmell. A steam navvy is to start work in a few days’ time on a tunnel close to Kote Maori. The four permanent cottages for the staff, built in concrete, have been finished, and three of them are occupied. Mr. lloulse, engineer’s assistant at Kote Maori, is visiting Auckland.
