ALPINE TRAGEDY
HOLIDAY PARTY OVERWHELMED LONDON, Jan. 0. Six French and two German skiiei's were killed in the avalanche which overwhelmed a party of sportsmen on the Arl Berg (Tyrol) «t the week-end. Maurice Kackham and A. A. Hopper, prominent London civil servants; Hugh Morgan, an architect; Henry Maude, a. solicitor; C. F. Stocker, an oil works manager, and Miss Cicely Foster, were identified among the dead.
In addition, two Germans, the brothers Loehr, were killed. An Englishman, an Englishwoman and a German were extricated alive. All the English members of the party left London on Christmas Day. One of the rescuers, all of whom were forced to wear skis, says that he first saw the ski belonging to the Englishwoman, Miss Margaret Woodward, protruding from the snow. She was pulled out, suffering from concussion. Nearby an arm of one ot the Germans was also visible, and he was rescued. After that it was guesswork to locate the engulfed sportsmen.
